Art for a Good Cause!

Art for a Good Cause!

Valentine's Benefit
20th Anniversary

i have always thought that for me a good way to support charities and organizations that I care about is to donate a piece of my art when asked or even when not asked. It is so important to reach out and support others. I have donated art to Assistance Dogs of Hawaii and their events for almost 20 years. This organization is very dear to me. They do outstanding work pairing people with disabilities with a working dog that will make their life a little bit easier.

My service dog Wesley is from ADH

I have been blessed with three service dogs from ADH over the years. They have been true companions and helpers. Each with their own personality and making my life a whole lot better in many ways.

Peace - Carmel River

Peace
by Casey Shannon

This sumi-e was inspired by the Carmel River in California. It is so peaceful there and lovely. The light hits the water in amazing ways that create abundant color so striking to the artist's eye. This is one of my favorite places to paint and to watch all the critters that are drawn to the river peace.

The original painting was sold to a private collector in Carmel Valley, CA.

Kelly ~ Artist Extraordinaire

Kelly painting with Watercolor at Hospital

Artist Kelly of Simple Spirit of Monterey

“Being diagnosed with acute leukemia has given me a second chance at life, literally.

I no longer want to live another moment with unhappy lifestyles, people, jobs or circumstances that will hinder my overall sense of purpose and joy. Life is precious and it can end in a second. Before cancer, I had forgotten these things; I had forgotten all the simple things in life that bring me great pride, contentment, and joy. I was becoming one of the many that just seemed to exist and not reach out to tap into our true gifts and universal paths.

Since I have been painting in the hospital, I have been able to let go of my deadly disease and live in the present - without fear - and to feel good again about what I have accomplished throughout my life. I am a painter!! “

On a Personal Note!

Summer Contemporary Sumi-e
by Casey Shannon

On a Personal Note:
Today is my birthday and I have many things to be grateful for in my life. I am a year older and hopefully a year wiser. I am to be a grandma for the first time any day now. I have recently had my artwork displayed in a major central coast gallery. My art is featured in Dick Blick's 100 year celebration Studio Catalog. I am recovering successfully from a recent surgery. I live in one of the most beautiful areas on earth. I have family and friends who love and support me. And, I have the best service dog ever, Gabe. Life is good!

The above contemporary sumi-e is one of the first sumi-e created with my non- dominate left hand and one of my personal favorites. It was inspired by the many little flowers dancing on my deck during the summertime. The original painting was displayed in the Lauryn Taylor Art Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It sold to a gentleman living in Beijing China.

Ensō Aven

Ensō Aven

What is an Ensō?
The Ensō is one of the most prevalent images of Zen Art, and it has become a symbol of the clean and strong Japanese aesthetic. The ensō is an expression of the mind of the artist who brushes it. As a symbol, the circle expresses the totality of our being. The circle points to the most vital aspect of our essence -- it's ultimate wholeness. The ensō symbolizes enlightenment, power, and the universe itself. It is a direct expression of thusness or this-moment-as-it-is.

This image was inspired by my new granddaughter due to arrive soon. Her name will be Aven. Aven is a 15th century Celtic name meaning 'pure radiance'. Aven is also a flower. Mountain Aven's are delicate yet strong sturdy little flowers that grow in very high altitudes. These little beauties are related to the rose. Puts a different meaning to the phrase 'my wild Irish rose!'

Branches of Oak

Branches Of Oak Framed Print

Branches of Oak

This wonderful contemporary sumi-e by Casey Shannon was inspired by the lovely Oak Trees that surround my home. I love waking up in the morning to look out my window and see these majestic branches. You never know what little critter may have slept in them the previous night. It's always a surprise to see who may be curled up in the tree's strong branches and just waking to start the day. It's a very spiritual experience for me to witness this magic of nature.

Gorgeous Giclee prints are available at my Fine Art Gallery

Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay" from French) is a process of making fine art prints from a digital source usung ink-jet printing. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such prints. Beside its association with Iris prints, in the past few years, the word “giclée,” as a fine art term, has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant "archival" inks. I have 15 images to choose from in my Fine Art Gallery not found elsewhere.

Basho's Pond

Basho

Basho's Pond
Contemporary Sumi-e by Casey Shannon

Ever wonder who is the greatest Haiku artist of all time? In my humble opinion, that person would be Matsuo Basho. Matsuo Bashō (松尾 芭蕉, 1644 – November 28, 1694) was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan. During his lifetime, Bashō was recognized for his works in the collaborative haikai no renga form; today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as a master of brief and clear haiku. His poetry is internationally renowned, and within Japan many of his poems are reproduced on monuments and traditional sites.

'The great age of Haiku spans only a little over a hundred years, and yet it's poetry is a river that continues to flow. Basho is neither the beginning nor the end'. ~ Sam Hamill

At the ancient pond,
a frog plunges into,
the sound of water
~ Basho

The above Haiku is my favorite of Basho's many works and it was the inspiration for my sumi-e called 'Basho's Pond'. You may purchase a fine art reproduction of this sumi-e Here.

Robin Contemplating a Song

Robin Contemplating A Song Framed Print

Robin Contemplating a Song

Someone had to sing,
It was the little bird,
In the Spring tree.
~ Casey

This contemporary Sumi-e was inspired by all the beautiful Robins singing and dancing in the Oak Trees that surround my home. I am captivated by watching the wild birds and enjoy them very much as they play among the tree branches chasing each other. They flit from limb to limb in wild abandon. Birds are incredibly beautiful creatures and lovely to paint. There are many kinds of birds living here in Carmel Valley. This Spring the Robins seem to be everywhere with their song.

I have a wonderful new website where you can purchase my original Sumi-e as framed fine art reproductions at very resonable prices. You can finish your art print right on the website with a frame and mat of your choice and choose your glazing. It's very easy and so much fun to play with and choose your favorite. The materials and workmanship for each piece are of the finest quality available at an unbeatable price. Cards are also available.

Red Moon over Bamboo

Red Moon over Bamboo

Into the field of
yellow flowers,
The red setting sun!
~ Natsume Soseki

This is a contemporary Sumi-e I created one evening while I was sitting in my studio 'day dreaming'. The image appeared to me very clearly as if by a mysterious magic. I love bamboo and the significance of this majestic plant of the grass family. I often use bamboo as the subject for my paintings.

Ever since the beginning of Chinese and Japanese writing and painting, bamboo has been written about and also been painted in the same manner, in other words, a work depicting bamboo is both a painting and a piece of calligraphy. There are so-called “bamboo painters” who all their lives paint only bamboo. "The bamboo is strong, upright, and dependable. He may bend with the wind, the storm and the rain, but he never breaks. He is a true gentleman of courage and endurance". (Ju 1989).

Bamboo also exhibits a certain visual appeal. Its straight stalk was the symbol of the sage, in that adversity could always bend it but it could never break it. I want to be like the mighty bamboo!

Red Moon over Bamboo may be purchased as a Fine Art Reproduction and the original can be seen in Gallery Spirit.

Ensō - Zenga Art

Potter Enso ~ Nakazato Muan (1895-1985)
~ Photo: Robyn Buntin of Honolulu

Potter Enso Shikishiban
brushed by Nakazato Maun
about 1976

This is a treasure from my personal Ensō collection. What is an Enso? In Zen Buddhist painting, Ensō symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body and spirit create in full moment-to-moment concert. The Ensō symbolizes enlightenment, power, and the universe itself. It is a direct expression of thusness or this-moment-as-it-is. Ensō is considered to be one of the most profound subjects in zenga (Zen inspired painting).

'Kokoro tadashikereba sunawachi fude tadashi'.
If your mind is correct, the brush will be correct.

To learn more about the symbolism and beauty of 'The Ensō', please visit Gallery Enso.

You can also view Contemporary Western Ensō by Carmel artist Casey Shannon. There you can purchase original Ensō paintings or Fine Art Prints, which can be finished with a frame right on the website you will be directed to view. Enjoy!

Rain Bamboo

Rain Bamboo

This Sumi-e is called Rain Bamboo. It is my hottest selling image of last year and is proving to be a favorite seller this new year as well. It is also my most viewed piece of art on my POD (print on demand) websites.

Bamboo is a very special image in Asian art. Bamboo signifies strength and the ability to bend. In our current world and economic climate, we all can use this quality within ourselves. We can embrace the spirit of the bamboo. We need to be strong and we need to be able to bend with the times in grace.

The original sumi-e painting is for sale at my website CaseyShannon.com Click on 'Portfolios' and go to Gallery Essence. Various POD websites where you can purchase Fine Art Reproductions of 'Rain Bamboo' are listed at the bottom of the page.

Winter

Winter

We are entering the beautiful season of Winter. It can be lovely with it's starkness in colors of black and tones of gray.

This elegant sumi-e is called simply 'Winter'. Media: Sumi (ink) and Japanese watercolor. This image was inspired by the dying of nature in wintertime to make way for the new growth of Spring. Since I was a child, the season of Winter has fascinated me with it's beauty and also frightened me with it's power.

The original painting of 'Winter' was sold. However, you may still purchase Fine Art Reproductions in my Sumi Gallery at Imagekind and art prints from my Zazzle Gallery. You can also professionally finish your reproduction with your choice of frame and mat at both these locations. I would be honored if you would take a look at what is possible. Thank you!

Napa Valley Art Museum Exhibit

Spirit Standing Sumi-e

This elegant Sumi-e is called Spirit Standing. This image was inspired by the spirit that resides in all of nature. A spirit that is ever present and all encompassing. When I painted this Sumi-e, I was experiencing a little turmoil in my life. We all experience bumpy roads along our life journey. As I was painting in my mind during my pre-meditation, I was thinking how we can choose to have our spirits stand tall in the face of uncertainty and upset. My brush than flowed into this creation of ‘Spirit Standing’.

The original Sumi-e painting is currently on exhibit at The Napa Valley Art Museum, which is located in Yountville, CA. The address is: 55 Presidents Circle. My artwork will be on display until January 10, 2009.

Artist’s Reception: November 28, 2009 at 7PM.

The original sumi-e painting 'Spirit Standing' is for sale at the Art Museum. The proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to the museum for their enrichment.

You may purchase Fine Art Reproductions of this stunning piece in my Zazzle Gallery. You may finish your print with a beautiful frame of your choice right on the website before purchase. Enjoy!

Flower of White

Painting more traditionally.

This elegant sumi-e is called 'Flower of White'. This is a more traditional sumi-e painting and different
than most of my contemporary ink paintings. In this painting I have used primarily sumi (ink stick). This painting has only a touch of red at the flower's center. The original painting can be seen in the Gallery Be Well.

I love painting flowers and I am very inspired by their nature and presence. I concentrate on capturing the special spirit of flowers in my paintings with every stroke of my b
rush. Flowers are very powerful and yet blissfully delicate. They are with us blooming for only a short while. However, their beauty is undeniable and remains with us in our hearts long after their graceful bloom has faded from sight.

This 'Flower of White' image can be purchased as a gorgeous fine art giclee reproduction from Fine Art America. You may purchase your print as a framed piece right on the website or not as you like. You ca
n also mat it if you wish.

Here is an example of this image framed beautifully in a black and gold wooden frame with no mat. Prices are very reasonable at FAA and the workmanship on the frame is flawless and of the highest quality. The inks used for printing are the finest available. You may also choose your grade of paper starting with archival.
