Art Podcast

Art Podcast

Casey Shannon Studio

On June 16, 2020, I was asked to do a podcast as an invited artist talking about sumi for: "Let's Talk Art With Brooke". Doing a podcast was a new experience for me. I loved doing it and it was a lot of fun. I found Brooke to be a lovely person and very welcoming. If you have time to listen, I hope that you enjoy it.

Here is a link to the podcast: ( 30 minutes)

Inspiration in Art

  Inspiration in Art

Happiness by Casey
Happiness is a function of accepting 'what is'.

It's Much Easier by Casey
It's much easier to go with the flow.

These are very unsettling times that we live in today. The Covid-19 Caronavirus is turning our world upside down. The entire world is battling this disease. We must shelter in place and engage in social distancing. Schools and colleges are closed, we work from home, bars and restaurants are closed, Concerts are canceled, Sports activities are canceled, boarders are closed, travel is limited, and that's the short list of changes to our world.
These kind of changes to our everyday life are very concerning for all of us no matter where in the world we live, Depression and worry can be a constant problem. Stress is the most concerning for most.
Many years ago, I experienced a massive brain-stem stroke which turned my world on it's head. Everything changed for me in an instant. I feel today a bit like I did then. Confused and scared. Nothing is under control. I felt like screaming and I did!

Healing Art: Comfort and Inspiration

In my recovery from this stroke, I used my art as a healing tool for me. As soon as I could sit up in a wheelchair and hold a pen, I began drawing with a vengeance. I just knew art would save my life. And it helped tremendously!   I began drawing and adding to my drawings sayings that I found inspirational to me.
I'd like to share a few of those drawings with you in hopes you might find them healing and inspirational also.  You have already seen three in this blog. I'll add others here.

Life by Casey
Life works when you choose what you got.

So I hope you enjoyed viewing a few of my recovery drawings. I hope they made you smile. Take this uncertain time to do something you love to do. Walk your dog, hug a tree, do art, sing, dance, cherish your family and friends by emailing them or calling them.
We can get through this!

Year of the Metal Rat

Sumi-e by Nan Rae
(Permission from artist)

Chinese Horoscope - Year of The Metal Rat

The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. The Rat is also associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) Zi (子) and the midnight hours. In the terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day. In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.

Personality and Characteristics

Optimistic and energetic, people born in the Rat year are likable by all. They are sensitive to other’s emotions but are stubborn with their opinion. Their personality is kind, but due to weak communication skills, their words may seem impolite and rude. On the financial side, they like saving and can be stingy. However, their love for hoarding will sometimes cause them to waste money on unnecessary things.

The year of the metal rat will be a year of new beginnings for everyone!

The Rat is the first animal of the Chinese Zodiac, having won the Jade Emperor’s race.  There are different versions of this story, including what happened to the cat!

Apparently, the Rat represents diligence, kindness, and generosity, and the Metal Rat Year is going to be a strong, prosperous, and lucky year for most Chinese zodiac signs.

Art for a Good Cause!

Art for a Good Cause!

Valentine's Benefit
20th Anniversary

i have always thought that for me a good way to support charities and organizations that I care about is to donate a piece of my art when asked or even when not asked. It is so important to reach out and support others. I have donated art to Assistance Dogs of Hawaii and their events for almost 20 years. This organization is very dear to me. They do outstanding work pairing people with disabilities with a working dog that will make their life a little bit easier.

My service dog Wesley is from ADH

I have been blessed with three service dogs from ADH over the years. They have been true companions and helpers. Each with their own personality and making my life a whole lot better in many ways.

Interesting Sumi-e Brush

Time Brush

This is a very unusual brush. It's called a Time Brush.

The owner of the Chinese store writes about this brush:
I met this brush totally by accident when I was wandering in the market as I always do. Mr. Xu was putting together the brush handle and the brush tip. And, I knew it is an excellent choice for the shop when I notice the proud in his eyes. The brush handle is quite unique and every brush is the only one in the world because the shape varies for every one. Made of a special tree, the handle can only be found once or twice in every five years. After careful processing, the craftsman turned them into nice brushes for calligraphy and painting. The knots in the handle are called "tumor" and they have witnessed the passage of a long history. Therefore, the brush is named as "Time".  It is used for painting and calligraphy.

I purchased this brush from https://chineseart.store/
I am a Chinese Brush Painter. I use Chinese and Japanese brushes for my ink paintings. I also am a brush collector. I have hundreds of beautiful brushes and some are very rare. I knew this brush would be a wonderful addition to my collection.
The length of the handle varies from 50-60cm (20-24inch) and that of the hair is 9cm (3.5inch). The hair of this brush is goat. The tip (hair) of the brush can be replaced after extended usage. In this way, one can always have a new brush on hand. I am in love with this new Time Brush.
Studio Photo of Some Brushes
This is a photograph of only a very small portion of the brushes in my collection. Maybe it's 1/4 of the brushes that I have on hand to play with when I paint.
