Art Podcast

Art Podcast

Casey Shannon Studio

On June 16, 2020, I was asked to do a podcast as an invited artist talking about sumi for: "Let's Talk Art With Brooke". Doing a podcast was a new experience for me. I loved doing it and it was a lot of fun. I found Brooke to be a lovely person and very welcoming. If you have time to listen, I hope that you enjoy it.

Here is a link to the podcast: ( 30 minutes)

Interesting Sumi-e Brush

Time Brush

This is a very unusual brush. It's called a Time Brush.

The owner of the Chinese store writes about this brush:
I met this brush totally by accident when I was wandering in the market as I always do. Mr. Xu was putting together the brush handle and the brush tip. And, I knew it is an excellent choice for the shop when I notice the proud in his eyes. The brush handle is quite unique and every brush is the only one in the world because the shape varies for every one. Made of a special tree, the handle can only be found once or twice in every five years. After careful processing, the craftsman turned them into nice brushes for calligraphy and painting. The knots in the handle are called "tumor" and they have witnessed the passage of a long history. Therefore, the brush is named as "Time".  It is used for painting and calligraphy.

I purchased this brush from https://chineseart.store/
I am a Chinese Brush Painter. I use Chinese and Japanese brushes for my ink paintings. I also am a brush collector. I have hundreds of beautiful brushes and some are very rare. I knew this brush would be a wonderful addition to my collection.
The length of the handle varies from 50-60cm (20-24inch) and that of the hair is 9cm (3.5inch). The hair of this brush is goat. The tip (hair) of the brush can be replaced after extended usage. In this way, one can always have a new brush on hand. I am in love with this new Time Brush.
Studio Photo of Some Brushes
This is a photograph of only a very small portion of the brushes in my collection. Maybe it's 1/4 of the brushes that I have on hand to play with when I paint.

Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions

Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions

High Places by Casey

Morning by Casey

As many of you that read my posts over the years know, I am a college instructor as well as a sumi artist. Well, I have great news today! My grades were turned in yesterday at the college which has freed me up to do more art this summer. I am very excited about that!

These two Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions were created yesterday on the first day of my summer vacation. I hope you enjoy seeing them. Using watercolor paper, sumi (ink), and Japanese watercolors. My sketches are minimalist. My painting philosophy is "Less is More'.

I was taught this way of thinking in art college when I attended Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. It was in Mr. Moore's design class that I first learned it. That was a long time ago. However, as I progressed toward my passion of CBP (Chinese Brush Painting) or in Japan called Sumi-e, this way of thinking about painting stayed with me and has served me well.

These images are available from my Fine Art America site.

If you have the time, I would love for you to visit my art website. It's quite nice!

Sumi Watercolor Sketches

Sumi Watercolor Sketches

On a cold winters day, it's always nice to find a pleasant activity to do indoors. I am having a bit of fun today creating some sumi watercolor sketches. Using watercolor paper, sumi (ink), and Japanese watercolors. My sketches are minimalist. My painting philosophy is "Less is More'.

However, as I progressed toward my passion of CBP (Chinese Brush Painting) or in Japan called Sumi-e, this way of thinking about painting stayed with me and has served me well.

Here are a few of my sketches.

Year of the Dog 2018

YEAR OF THE DOG 2018

The year of the dog starts today! According to Chinese astrologer Laura Lau, this year will feel very different from last year — and that might be for the better. Lau says that, within the Chinese Zodiac, the Dog is a true companion, associated with loyalty, honesty, intelligence, and a strong sense of right and wrong.  "Dogs are known to be swift and passionate believers in their own personal philosophy," Lau says. "The Dog does his best to protect high-integrity people and support their cause."

Sumi-e by Patricia Larkin Green, USA

In other words, this year of the Dog may see people fighting for the causes they believe in. This influence could manifest itself as large-scale political movements or something as simple as local community work and small acts of kindness.
Sumi-e by Alfred Freddy Krupa, Croatia

Japanese Cultural Center Chicago - Image

"The earth element makes this a gentler dog than other elements," Lau says. This element encourages us to take a cooler-headed approach to problems, rather than letting our emotions flare up and get the better of our reasoning. Whatever sign you may be (and if you don't know, you can look it up here), the year of the Dog is a great time to reach out to those around you and become a friendly presence in their lives, if not a true friend. And, if you're already speaking out for your values, you just might get an energizing boost this year.

Spring Flower Fall

This elegant framed painting has been donated to the Assistance Dogs of Hawaii. They are having a charity benefit in February called 'Puppy Love". This painting will be offered in the silent auction. I hope it brings in a lot of money for ADH. This is the organization that trained my beloved service dog, Gabe.

O-Bon Festival

Chanting 'The Lotus Chant"

O-Bon Spirit Festival

I attended the O-Bon Festival at the Portland Japanese Garden last night. What a special occasion that was! So lovely! I found such peace and respect at a time when our world seems to need it the most.

O-Bon is a Buddhist memorial festival, which dates back more than 1300 years in Japan. Buddhist services are held at temples and homes throughout Japan to pray for one’s ancestors and particularly for those who have died within the past year. This serves as a reminder of the importance of family ties, as a gesture of respect for those who have gone before, and as an acknowledgment of the brevity and preciousness of life as a family.

We danced, we chanted, and we lit candles to float on the pond to help guide the spirits of our loved ones and Ancestors.

“O-Bon is a time to reflect on our immortality and remind ourselves that we are not alone, but that we are members of a vast and ancient society made up of both our forebears and of future generations.” – Garden Member
