I am honored to have an article about me in the June / July issue.

It is an article about my artwork and how I turned tragedy into triumph. It is written by art coach Renee Philips. I am a contemporary sumi-e artist reaching beyond traditional brush painting and creating the sound of one hand. Here is another version of the article online in the Healing Power of Art
"If you ever feel like giving up on pursuing your creative passion during times of personal hardship, this article, that has appeared in a different version in the June-July 2015 issue of Professional Artist magazine, may turn your life around."

Healing Power of Art

Recovery Art from Casey Shannon

The Amazing Power of Art in Healing

I have experienced first hand the amazing power of the creative process in healing. You never really know what life has in store for you. Several years ago, I encountered an event that would change my life forever. I experienced a massive left hemisphere brain-stem stroke four days after my 36th birthday. In an instant, I was paralyzed. I could not breathe, speak, walk, and I lost the use of my dominant right hand. Needless to explain, this was very devastating and the prognosis for my recovery was bleak. I worked very hard in rehabilitation (years actually) and slowly learned to talk again and walk as well, eventually obtaining added assistance with  my licensed service dog, Gabe.

However, I did not recover the use of my dominant right arm and hand. So, I taught myself to draw with my left hand and used this activity and my drawings as an integral part of my stroke recovery. As soon as I could sit up in a wheel chair, I began drawing with a vengeance. I just intuitively knew art would save my life. There is something about the creative process that is absolute healing. I knew this deep inside myself and worked toward recovery with art as healing.

Here is a wonderful article written by Renee Phillips about the 'Healing Power of Art'. This article was written for 'Professional Artist Magazine'

Stroke of Luck ~ Healing with Art

Stroke of Luck ~ Healing with Art

I am a contemporary Sumi-e artist reaching beyond the limits of traditional ink painting and creating the ‘sound of one hand’. My paintings one would not generally call traditional sumi-e. However, I adhere to the traditional sumi-e principles and philosophies, as well as, the traditional preparation before beginning a sumi-e painting. Sumi-e expresses the character and soul of the artist. It is a meditative process and spiritually personal. Understanding this concept has been at the center of my art.

I experienced a massive brain-stem stroke 30 years ago. As an international sumi-e artist, I am often asked to tell my story of victory over stroke and how I used my art as an integral part of my recovery. I decided a few years ago to put my stroke story on my personal art website in the hopes it would inspire and benefit others recovering from stroke and also other artists in need of a little boost.

My heartfelt mission is to tell everyone on the planet that there is hope and life after stroke or any traumatic life-altering experience. I want to inspire others not only with my words but also with my art.

In their words, through their eyes, by their hands!

Book
In their words, through their eyes, by their hands
by Art for Cancer

In February 2012, the ART for Cancer Foundation held a week long exhibit at Toronto City Hall with the goal of continuing to raise awareness of the power of the creative process as a healing force. I was honored to have my artwork and my story displayed at this exhibit. The art exhibit was a wonderful kaleidoscope of colour, texture, shapes, and images, each uniquely demonstrating the healing power of art. Many participants shared their personal stories, which brought a level of depth and meaning far beyond the aesthetics of the art.

There were so many incredible stories of courage and hope that the one week exhibit did not do them justice! This book is a collection of their stories- in their own words, and their art – through their eyes and by their hands. My art and my story are featured in this beautiful publication. Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to and benefit the:
