Award Winner ~ Touching Beach

58th Annual National Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America

I am pleased to share with you that my sumi painting called "Touching Beach" won an award at this juried exhibition.
I won the Blue Heron Award.

Judging Criteria by the judge:

“As the juror for the Sumi-e Society’s annual juried show (painting section), I will be looking for three key elements- -vitality, simplicity, and spontaneity. Vitality is expressed through strong brush strokes which convey a sense of qi (energy). Simplicity puts an emphasis on moving beyond external form, capturing instead the essence of the subject matter through one’s own unique style; relatedly, within any composition, negative space is just as important as positive space. As for spontaneity, a painter’s abilities are most readily seen through ink tonality--the
ability to strike harmonious balance between different shades of ink, or between ink and color.”

58th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Sumi Society of America

The 58th Annual Exhibition of the Sumi Society of America will again be held online this year due to Covid-19 precautions. Calligraphy and ink paintings from members of SSA have been juried into the show.

Sungsook Setton is the judge for the ink paintings and John Shun-Chieh Wang is the judge for the calligraphy.

I am thrilled to announce that my ink painting "Touching Beach" has been juried into this show.

Cannon Beach Art Gallery - Haystack Rock Exhibition

Haystack Rock is a unique 235 feet monolith that attracts wildlife and tourists alike and is part of the Oregon Coast’s geological history, formed millions of year ago by lava flows that created many of the dramatic capes and headlands along the coast. Haystack Rock is protected under U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a seabird nesting colony and it is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is a State protected Marine Garden.

Haystack Rock exhibition - This is a juried group show. The exhibition was open to local and regional artists. Compositions are based on the scenic Haystack rock, located in Cannon Beach, Oregon. I am thrilled to report that three of my paintings juried into this show.

Description: This landscape is a contemporary Sumi-e. A Buddhist Monk sits atop a high mountain in contemplation. He has a little friend on his lap, a small fluffy bird. This image depicts the silence and beauty of nature. 19 x 15 Asian Ink and watercolor on Xuan.

I am so pleased to announce that my sumi-e painting called Mountain Meditation has been juried and accepted into the 57th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. The show will be online this year due to Covid 19 and the social distancing rules. This is the

57th Annual Juried Exhibition - the Fifth Worldwide Internet Exhibition. An Internet Exhibition is a virtual exhibition in which paintings and calligraphies are not hung in a physical gallery but rather viewed on an Internet website. The Internet site will be online for one year enabling reach to a much wider audience. The purpose of the exhibition is to publicly show the best current East Asian brush painting and calligraphy and to further the Society’s mission.

JUROR, JUDGE and WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR

Liang Wei was born and raised in Guangzhou, China. Since childhood he has loved calligraphy and enjoyed admiring landscape, flowers and trees.His first painting lessons were in landscape, taught by his teacher Huang Anren. He studied art at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts where his advisor was Professor Fang Chuxiong.

Inspiration in Art

Happiness by Casey

Happiness is a function of accepting 'what is'.

It's Much Easier by Casey

It's much easier to go with the flow.

These are very unsettling times that we live in today. The Covid-19 Caronavirus is turning our world upside down. The entire world is battling this disease. We must shelter in place and engage in social distancing. Schools and colleges are closed, we work from home, bars and restaurants are closed, Concerts are canceled, Sports activities are canceled, boarders are closed, travel is limited, and that's the short list of changes to our world.

These kind of changes to our everyday life are very concerning for all of us no matter where in the world we live, Depression and worry can be a constant problem. Stress is the most concerning for most.

Many years ago, I experienced a massive brain-stem stroke which turned my world on it's head. Everything changed for me in an instant. I feel today a bit like I did then. Confused and scared. Nothing is under control. I felt like screaming and I did!

Healing Art: Comfort and Inspiration

In my recovery from this stroke, I used my art as a healing tool for me. As soon as I could sit up in a wheelchair and hold a pen, I began drawing with a vengeance. I just knew art would save my life. And it helped tremendously! I began drawing and adding to my drawings sayings that I found inspirational to me.

I'd like to share a few of those drawings with you in hopes you might find them healing and inspirational also. You have already seen three in this blog. I'll add others here.

Life works when you choose what you got.

Year of the Metal Rat

Chinese Horoscope - Year of The Metal Rat

The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. The Rat is also associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) Zi (子) and the midnight hours. In the terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day. In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.

Personality and Characteristics

Optimistic and energetic, people born in the Rat year are likable by all. They are sensitive to other’s emotions but are stubborn with their opinion. Their personality is kind, but due to weak communication skills, their words may seem impolite and rude. On the financial side, they like saving and can be stingy. However, their love for hoarding will sometimes cause them to waste money on unnecessary things.

The year of the metal rat will be a year of new beginnings for everyone!

The Rat is the first animal of the Chinese Zodiac, having won the Jade Emperor’s race. There are different versions of this story, including what happened to the cat!

Apparently, the Rat represents diligence, kindness, and generosity, and the Metal Rat Year is going to be a strong, prosperous, and lucky year for most Chinese zodiac signs.

Art for a Good Cause!

20th Anniversary

i have always thought that for me a good way to support charities and organizations that I care about is to donate a piece of my art when asked or even when not asked. It is so important to reach out and support others. I have donated art to Assistance Dogs of Hawaii and their events for almost 20 years. This organization is very dear to me. They do outstanding work pairing people with disabilities with a working dog that will make their life a little bit easier.

My service dog Wesley is from ADH

I have been blessed with three service dogs from ADH over the years. They have been true companions and helpers. Each with their own personality and making my life a whole lot better in many ways.
