Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions

Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions

High Places by Casey

Morning by Casey

As many of you that read my posts over the years know, I am a college instructor as well as a sumi artist. Well, I have great news today! My grades were turned in yesterday at the college which has freed me up to do more art this summer. I am very excited about that!

These two Sumi-e Watercolor Impressions were created yesterday on the first day of my summer vacation. I hope you enjoy seeing them. Using watercolor paper, sumi (ink), and Japanese watercolors. My sketches are minimalist. My painting philosophy is "Less is More'.

I was taught this way of thinking in art college when I attended Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. It was in Mr. Moore's design class that I first learned it. That was a long time ago. However, as I progressed toward my passion of CBP (Chinese Brush Painting) or in Japan called Sumi-e, this way of thinking about painting stayed with me and has served me well.

These images are available from my Fine Art America site.

If you have the time, I would love for you to visit my art website. It's quite nice!

Sumi Watercolor Sketches

Sumi Watercolor Sketches

Mt. Fuji at Summertime
by Casey Shannon

On a cold winters day, it's always nice to find a pleasant activity to do indoors. I am having a bit of fun today creating some sumi watercolor sketches.

Here are a few of my sketches.

Year of the Pig/Boar - 2019

This is my Chinese Zodiac Sign

2019 is a Year of the Pig according to the Chinese zodiac, and it's an Earth Pig year. Years of the Pig include 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, and 2031. In Chinese astrology, each year belongs to a Chinese zodiac animal according to the 12-year cycle.

Pigs are diligent, compassionate, and generous. They have great concentration: once they set a goal, they will devote all their energy to achieving it. Though Pigs rarely seek help from others, they will not refuse to give others a hand. Pigs never suspect trickery, so they are easily fooled.

General speaking, Pigs are relatively calm when facing trouble. No matter how difficult the problems are Pigs encounter, they can handle things properly and carefully. They have a great sense of responsibility to finish what they are engaged in.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Gold, and Water Pigs

In Chinese element theory, each zodiac sign is associated with one of the five elements: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. An Earth Pig comes once in a 60-year cycle. It is theorized that a person's characteristics are decided by their birth year's zodiac animal sign and element.
Each year is also associated with one of five elements, and 2019 is an Earth Pig year.

Type of Pig Characteristics
Wood Pig (1935, 1995) Good-natured, lovely, easy-going, generous, brave but irritable
Fire Pig (1947, 2007) Ambitious, persevering, but impatient
Earth Pig (1959, 2019) Communicative, popular among their friends, with a strong sense of time keeping
Gold Pig (1971, 2031) Broad-minded, amicable, and willing to help others
Water Pig (1923, 1983) Gentle, modest, earnest, responsible, but subjective in life

Career Prospects

Pig's will have a small setback in their careers in 2019. But everything will turn out for the good when they begin moving. For entrepreneurs, it's a good year to develop their businesses. The last months of 2019 are the best time for Pigs to achieve their goals.

Health

Health-wise, Pigs will have an average time in 2019. Pigs are advised to find a balance between work and rest. What's more, they should pay attention to traffic safety when on the road.

Finances

Pigs will have very good financial prospects in 2019. Pigs will do well in their investments and get well rewarded.

Love

2019 is a lucky year for male Pigs in their relationships. Male Pigs will meet an attractive woman easily this year.
For female Pigs, your relationship's development will not be as good as for males of your sign. You will need to spend more time on finding a partner but suffer a temporary lack of progress.

Is Pig Year 2019 a Lucky Year?

According to Chinese astrology, in the year of their birth sign (本命年běnmìngnián /bnn-ming-nyen/ 'origin (of) life year') people offend Tai Sui, the god of age in Chinese mythology, and so have bad luck. Therefore Pigs should be more careful about all aspects of their lives in the year of their birth sign.

High Mountains Flowing Water
International Chinese Calligraphy and Ink Painting Society
North America Branch - ICCPS

We had a stunning exhibition at:
Oregon Society of Artists
2185 S.W. Park Place
Portland, Oregon

The exhibit was:
October 26-29 2018

High Mountains Flowing Water is a classical Chinese song honoring friendship. The North America Branch of ICCPS is made up of artists with different backgrounds and styles from all over the world tied together with the same love for Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. Spanning continents of high mountains, and crossing oceans of flowing water, the artists hope to share their art with the rest of the world.

Contemporary and traditional Asian scrolls of calligraphy and ink painting by 30 artists from 11 countries were on display. The show was curated by Casey Shannon OSA member and Director of the North America Branch ICCPS.  Also helping was Annie Gazeley, long time Portland
resident and supporter of the arts.
