Making of a Japanese Hanging Scroll

Asian Hanging Scrolls
Tokyo, Japan

Calligraphy and/or Sumi-e hanging scrolls are made from the thinnest of Xuan or Mulberry Paper. This type of paper is better known in the West as Rice Paper even though there is no rice in the paper. It is wet mounted and then put on silk brocade. This is an extremely tricky process and requires many steps and much skill. The process has been in existence for centuries in China and Japan.

Below is a lovely video showing the process.

Peace - Carmel River

Peace
by Casey Shannon

This sumi-e was inspired by the Carmel River in California. It is so peaceful there and lovely. The light hits the water in amazing ways that create abundant color so striking to the artist's eye. This is one of my favorite places to paint and to watch all the critters that are drawn to the river peace.

The original painting was sold to a private collector in Carmel Valley, CA.

New Art Studio "Digs"

Art Studio
Casey Shannon Studio

Here is a look at my new studio "digs". After moving and unpacking which seemed to last all summer long, I am finally almost settled into my new space. Everything is all "tickety boo' right now. "Tickey Boo" meaning all organized. (One of my grandmother's famous silly sayings.) However, the cleanliness won't last long as soon as I get busy and down to business.

My sumi awaits!!!

Stroke of Luck ~ Healing with Art

I am a contemporary Sumi-e artist reaching beyond the limits of traditional ink painting and creating the ‘sound of one hand’. My paintings one would not generally call traditional sumi-e. However, I adhere to the traditional sumi-e principles and philosophies, as well as, the traditional preparation before beginning a sumi-e painting. Sumi-e expresses the character and soul of the artist. It is a meditative process and spiritually personal. Understanding this concept has been at the center of my art.

I experienced a massive brain-stem stroke 30 years ago. As an international sumi-e artist, I am often asked to tell my story of victory over stroke and how I used my art as an integral part of my recovery. I decided a few years ago to put my stroke story on my personal art website in the hopes it would inspire and benefit others recovering from stroke and also other artists in need of a little boost.

My heartfelt mission is to tell everyone on the planet that there is hope and life after stroke or any traumatic life-altering experience. I want to inspire others not only with my words but also with my art.
