Sumi Watercolor Sketches

Sumi Watercolor Sketches

Mt. Fuji at Summertime
by Casey Shannon

On a cold winters day, it's always nice to find a pleasant activity to do indoors. I am having a bit of fun today creating some sumi watercolor sketches. Using watercolor paper, sumi (ink), and Japanese watercolors. My sketches are minimalist. My painting philosophy is "Less is More'.

I was taught this way of thinking in art college when I attended Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. It was in Mr. Moore's design class that I first learned it. That was a long time ago. However, as I progressed toward my passion of CBP (Chinese Brush Painting) or in Japan called Sumi-e, this way of thinking about painting stayed with me and has served me well.

Here are a few of my sketches.
