This beautiful calligraphy was created by Tai Oi Yee. Artist Note: " this is Chinese calligraphy of the word dragon in my wild grass style. You can still vaguely see the head and claws on the left side, and the back and tail on the right side". Tai Oi Yee is a member of the North American branch of ICCPS.

2012 is Year of the Dragon and it will arrive on February 4, 2012. (Note: Chinese New Year Day is on January 23, 2012. The first day of 2012 Chinese Astrology Year is on February 4, 2012.) The Dragon is a legendary animal and it is the symbol of the emperor in China. Since the Dragon is coated with mysterious color, Chinese consider the dragon to be unpredictable, untouchable and people cannot see its head and tail at the same time. Therefore, we might see something unexpected happening in 2012. Also a person with too many dragons in the Chinese astrology birth chart will become smarter, sly and unpredictable in the coming year.

Happy New Year Everyone! I wish you all the best in 2012.

Sketchbook 2012 ~ Sumi-e and Haiku

Sketchbook Project 2012

Theme: This is a Sketchbook

The Sketchbook Project is a constantly evolving library of artists' sketchbooks from across the globe.

This year thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at art spaces in 14 cities. After the tour, they will join the collection of the Brooklyn Art Library and made available to the public seven days a week.

The Brooklyn Art Library houses thousands of sketchbooks from various artists and lends them out for folks to view. I have participated in the sketchbook project since 2010. I enjoy making these books. As an artist, for me they help keep my creative juices flowing. Each year, you choose a theme for your sketchbook from the themes available. This year my theme is: 'This ia a Sketchbook' and I chose to fill my book with "Haiku and Sumi-e'. Haiku is Japanese poetry and Sumi-e is Japanese ink painting. Enjoy!

'Kizuna' sums up year 2011

The chief priest of Kyoto's Kiyomizu temple displays his calligraphy of "kizuna", meaning "bond".

Japanese public chooses 'kizuna' as kanji of 2011

The Japanese word "kizuna", meaning bonds or connections between people, has been chosen as Japan's kanji of 2011.

The kanji, or Chinese pictorial script, for "kizuna" emerged top of a public poll for the character that best summed up the year.

For Japan, 2011 was dominated by the earthquake and tsunami in March.

The disasters led to unprecedented numbers of Japanese helping one another.

Red Snow Bird Contemplating Spring

Winter is here! This is the first full day of winter. Winter began in California yesterday at 9:32 pm. The season of winter brings peace and silence. It is a time for quiet and rejuvenation of nature and of our souls. There is no beauty quite like that of snow and wintertime beauty. As an artist and lover of the outdoors and nature, I have come to love our magnificent earth in all her wondrous seasons especially her glistening magical snow.

We do not have a lot of snow in California. However, we have enough to enjoy and appreciate. The above sumi-e of an imaginary 'Red Snow Bird' was inspired by the season of winter. It was created on Canson paper, which is made in France. This type of paper displays the white ink and Japanese watercolor of sumi-e beautifully. Here is the work area of the smallest Sumi-e Studio in America and perhaps the smallest in the entire world. Casey Shannon Studio is located in Carmel, CA. USA. The studio is nestled under huge majestic oak trees and is surrounded by amazing nature and delightful wild critters which provide me with an abundance of inspiration for my ink paintings. This is a view of the area cleaned up a bit. It is normally filled with ink, brushes, artist chops, rice paper, and Japanese watercolors. These are the tools I mainly work with.

What is Sumi-e?

(Sumi = Ink - Sumi-e = Ink Painting)

The Sumi-e art form is steeped in Zen Buddhism. In Sumi-e or ink painting, the artist strives to 'become one' with the object in the painting. Brush painting or ink painting called Sumi-e in Japan is done quickly without over thinking your subject matter. Once the brush is laid to the white paper and you have a mark, that's it. There is no erasing, doing over, or changing. The painting 'just exists'. This is why one who creates Sumi-e paints from a quiet centered place and has the intention of capturing the object's spirit and essence with just a few simple and graceful brush strokes.

Sumi-e exemplifies the concept of 'Less is More’.

Artist Statement

I am a contemporary Sumi-e artist reaching beyond the limits of traditional ink painting and creating the ‘sound of one hand’. As an artist, for me, ink painting is a meditation and a creative process. I concentrate on trying to capture spirit as the ink is transferred to the paper with the stroke of my brush. The brush is pushed across the surface of the paper quickly. If your intention is correct, the object in the picture seems to 'breathe and take on life'. This unseen yet felt breath begins to fill the page with spirit just as it does in all of nature which surrounds us. The special power of the painted form shines and immerges through the ink and the white page. The white space surrounding the painted form becomes as important as the object itself. The ink painting represents soul, spirit, elegance, and beauty all at the same time and in glorious concert.

My life experiences and challenges have increased my sensitivities to this ancient art form.

'Kokoro tadashikereba sunawachi fude tadashi'.
If your mind is correct, the brush will be correct.

The media is sumi (ink) and Japanese watercolor with flecks of gold. The original painting is not for sale and was exhibited in an art exhibition in Tokyo, Japan.

Sumi-e 'Spring Flower Fall'

Mounted in a two color scroll

Mounting an ink painting in a traditional scroll is an interesting process and not for the faint of heart.... let me tell you. It's a tricky business not to ruin your finished artwork in the process. I do not usually mount my work in a scroll. My sumi-e is modern and contemporary. It is usually framed Western style. I thought it might be fun to mount some of my work in a traditional Asian way and see what the result looked like and I was extremely pleased by the contrast. It is definitely 'East meets West' in nature.

Since this was published in April 2011, I am a little bit late in announcing this event in my blog. However, 'better late than never' as they always say. So.....

My sumi-e titled Tulips Three was chosen by the Current Oncology Magazine of Canada to grace their cover. I am honored.

About our cover: Tulips Three; Sumi-e painting by Casey Shannon, a member of the ART for Cancer Group (AFC).

The art on the cover of this issue is entitled “Tulips Three” and was created by Casey Shannon in memory of her son-in-law who died three years ago from Sarcoma. Media: Sumi (ink) and Japanese watercolor.

From the artist: “This image was inspired by a pot of tulips dancing and swaying in the spring breeze as it sat on my deck. I was gazing out my window at them and was struck by this sight. I thought of my son-in-law and how he struggled with the vicious form of cancer called Sarcoma and how he courageously engaged it in the dance of life and death. I am honored to be a member of AFC. We prove the power of art. Together we speak through love, color, and imagination.”

I donate 100% of all net sales from this piece of art to the Sarcoma Foundation, in memory of my son-in-law. The mission of the Sarcoma Foundation is to advocate for increased research to find new and better therapies with which to treat patients with Sarcoma. Kelly's Story ~ A Story of Hope and Art

I am writing this story of grace and hope about my daughter Kelly who is currently fighting AML (leukemia). Kelly is an amazing woman and my hero. She was unexpectedly diagnosed with AML three months ago in March 2011. After a routine visit to her gynecologist and having her blood work analyzed, Kelly's doctor called her at work and said she needed to get to the ER immediately. At the ER, Kelly learned she had 86% cancer cells in her bone marrow.....a deathly blow.

Kelly was a busy working mother before her diagnosis. Her daughter Aven is 7 months old at the time of this writing. Kelly has always been an organized 'do it all' person. She is a mother, wife, restaurant manager in a large corporation, private pilot, and artist. She was scrambling to get everything done in a small 24 hour period of time each day. The cancer has now slowed her down. My daughter remains in the hospital undergoing chemo treatment for her acute leukemia, which consists of 24/7 chemo for a week. Then, waiting for her blood count to come back up. Then, repeating the process. She will have to repeat this process 5 times in total. With prayer, hope, triumph, and luck, her leukemia will be in recession and stay that way after these processes are over.

Through all of this, my daughter has a terrific attitude and has not lost her crazy sense of humor. Kelly is an incredible woman. She is strong. She is a bright spirit. She is a fighter. Kelly will be well.

"The sound of "opening day" always gives me vibes of excited anticipation with a tinge of nervousness even though I am just an appreciator or audience. And often time I am the first to arrive at the show in the middle of preparation chaos - LOL!! Today, as usual, I was the humiliating first-comer at the calligraphy exhibition in Shibuya. The small gallery that is located nearby Shibuya Station most famously known as a labyrinth, and inside it, every wall was crowded with works of about 40 members, and among them, I found a hanging scroll by Casey. I don't know many things about calligraphy however I could see her mastery hand especially at bending of the trunk or joints of branches. As a Japanese who did SHODO once before I know how long it takes until one is able to attain such brush works. "

Contemporary Sumi-e by Casey Shannon

This image was created using sumi (ink) and watercolor painted on Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper). What is Shuen Paper you might ask? It is Chinese rice paper. Rice paper is the brush painter's canvas. Mastering the way ink behaves on the different rice papers is one of the essential skills of the brush painter. There are basically two kinds of rice paper -- raw paper and sized paper. Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper) is raw paper and the most popular paper in China among brush painters and calligraphers. It is the most sensitive of the rice papers, cheerfully displaying dynamic strokes and complex shade variations with translucent fluidity and original spontaneity. These tiny pink flowers grow abundantly on the hillsides in Carmel in the Spring and cascade in the wind like pink waterfalls.

Tribute to Japan!

I have created a special Gallery Japan. This gallery is dedicated to the courageous people of Japan. It is my small way of giving tribute to a strong nation in crisis. The people of Japan are currently going through tremendous challenges. I want to acknowledge their courage and strength and the best way I know how to do that is through my sumi-e art. Art has a way of transcending horrendous tragedy and speaks to us through our hearts, our spirits, and our souls. Sumi-e exemplifies this concept.

The images I have chosen to show in this gallery are all bamboo. These images are for only display. Bamboo signifies strength and the ability to bend. This quality of bamboo is much like the character of the Japanese people. When the storm winds blow, they bend. When the storm winds cease, they stand tall with strength and integrity. Japan is shaken not broken. Bless our friends in Japan!

This sumi-e is one of my personal favorites by my artist friend Manuel Garcia de la Cruz. The stem of this plant dances with movement. The painting's composition moves your eye from corner to corner with delight and ease. Manuel is a member of the North American branch of the International Chinese Calligraphy Art and Ink Painting Society (ICCPS).

Manuel was born in Asturias, Northern Spain. For the last thirty years, he has lived in Denia, on the Mediterranean coast, where he has his workshop and studio. Manuel hashad many exhibitions locally and in Ibiza. Nature is a strong influence on his work, which centers around seascapes, mountains, beaches and the countryside. I am a great admirer of Manuel's sumi-e. His paintings produce clean, bold brush strokes with brilliant light and color while addressing the spirit of his subject matter. He is an exquisitely talented artist and one I am honored to have in the North American branch of ICCPS. I am so pleased he decided to join the society.

Holy Cow! Well, this certainly does not happen very often. Snow in Carmel California. I had to absolutely blog about this today. I usually blog about the ancient art of sumi-e but today I blog about the art of nature ~ Snow. It snowed last night and was so quiet I did not even know or hear it.

I woke up this morning to a beautiful dusting of snow! The weather man had been talking about the possibility of snow in Carmel all the way to the ocean but I thought he was crazy. Guess what! It happened. Wowzer!

I can't create a blog without at least one mention of sumi-e.
It would be 'un-natural' and 'out-of-character' for me!

I have painted several beautiful sumi-e inspired by 'snow'.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2011 is the Year of the Golden Rabbit, which begins on February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign. Rabbits are private individuals and a bit introverted. People born in the Year of the Rabbit are reasonably friendly individuals who enjoy the company of a group of good friends. They are good teachers, counselors and communicators, but also need their own space.

Chinese Zodiac

According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation. Don't try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail. To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children. Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise.

Rabbit Calligraphy

Not many people know that the Rabbit is the symbol of the Moon, while the Peacock is the symbol of the Sun, and that together, these two animal signs signify the start of day and night. And, represent the Yin and Yang of life. It is said that anyone making supplications for wishes to be fulfilled are certain to get what they want... and in the Year of the Rabbit, the wish-granting aspect of the Sun and the Moon combined is multiplied. The Moon is YIN and this is the Yin of Heaven, signifying magic. Thus on each of the Full Moon nights of this year, go out into your garden to gaze into the Full Moon and visualize plenty of Moon dust and Moon glow flowing into you, filling your whole body with bright white light and granting you fearlessness, love and courage. This will not only strengthen your inner "Chi" energy, it will also bring wisdom into your life.

What is Shodo you ask?

Sho = writing
Do = a path of life

Shodo (pronounced sho-doe) is one of the traditional Japanese "Do" forms, such as Chado (tea ceremony), Kado (flower arrangement), Budo (martial ways), etc. Shodo is the specialized art of artistically writing kanji (Japanese and Chinese characters). It originated in China more than 3000 years ago.

Enso and the Haiku

The Sketchbook Project sponsored by The Art House Gallery library will house sketchbooks by artists from around the world. Visitors to the exhibit will receive library cards and be able to view the books at exhibitions around the country. The goal of the project is to create a giant collective of sketchbooks from around the globe and make it accessible to everyone. The Project was featured on CNN and the library will be touring across the country. My sketchbook this year will not be touring the country. Nor will it be on permanent display in New York.

Let me explain. I love creating these books. Every time I show my daughter my book, she says "Oh mom, don't send it on tour and then to stay in NY!" Well, this year she got her way. My sketchbook theme was storybook and I wrote a story about my canary Enso and dedicated it to my new granddaughter, Aven. When my daughter saw this book, she loved it and wanted to keep the book to give to Aven when she grows up. What could I say?

My entire illustrated storybook is available for viewing at Enso and the Haiku.

Coming Soon to a Computer near you!

As we begin a new year and open our hearts to new possibilities and joys, I begin a new sketchbook for The Art House Co-Op Gallery. My sketchbook will travel around the country on tour with other sketchbooks from artists all over the world. It will then be permanently on display at the 303 Grand Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

My theme for the 2011 sketchbook is 'StoryBook'. My story is called 'Enso and the Haiku'. Can you guess what it is going to be about? I'm not telling. However, the first page of my sketchbook is above. There might be a clue in there for you. The 40 page sketchbook is currently being created. I have 14 pages complete to date.

The sketchbook illustrations are all created with pen and ink, ink brush, and colored pencil. The outline is stamped with red cinnabar paste as is the artist chop at the bottom center of each page. The square artist chop translates into my name which is 'Casey'.

The entire sketchbook will be available for viewing soon on my art website caseyshannon.com.

Library

Walls of postcard size art from all over the globe sent to Moss, Norway!

This art event opened December 2, 2010 and will be open until February 2, 2011. This wonderful art was donated by international artists to help raise money for childrens' books in the library. Opening night 45 cards sold and raised 9000 NOK ($1479.00) for new books the first day! I understand that the people present were all exited and many took down names of artists and did research on the computers at the library.

This is the location of the first International Twitter Art Exhibit held in Moss Norway. It is the brain child of @DavidSandumArt ~ David Sandum, painter. See my post of November 11, 2010 for more information about the art exhibit.

David writes on his blog, "As so many of you are involved in #twitterartexhibit, I figured I'd better take some pics after today's meeting with the library director. Moss is a small town with about 30.000 people, so the library is not exactly humongus. But it has three floors and is more than suffiecient for the populus. The library (bibliotek in Norwegian) is located in a part of town called Møllerbyen that used to be part of the towns industry (years ago). The wall will will be able to show 240 cards, and so far we've received art from 173 artists (4 more days to go until deadline ends Nov 27th). The statue/sculpture out in front (of the boy reading), is made by American sculptor in Moss (from NY state), Bruce Naigles - who is well known here and a close friend of mine (we used to have studios next to each other for three years). This is my contribution to the Twitter Art Exhibit in Moss, Norway

The first ever International Twitter Art Exhibit postcard size event will be held in Moss, Norway on December 1, 2010 and will be on display for 2 months. This exhibit is the 'brain child' of fellow Twitter artist and friend @DavidSandumArt. The postcard art exhibit will benefit the Moss Children's Library. A wall of cards will be displayed for people to enjoy. Each card will be labeled with the artist's Name, City, Country, @TwitterName, and Title of Work. The cards will be sold for $34 (200 NOK) and all the sales will go to the children's library to buy books. I am honored to be part of this wonderful art event. Can you imagine 140 hand painted cards from artists all over the world covering a huge wall? How splendid for the eye to see!

Great news! Punkt Ø -Momentum (Norwegian goverment art agency), has now agreed to be a partner in project and custom-construct the large white wall for the cards, which will be located at the library entrance. This will take two workers a full days work!

NEW YORK — The publication of J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories" introduced a new generation of Americans to a Zen Buddhist koan roughly translated as, "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

"Making Dango"

This koan, which is an aid to meditation that cannot be solved by logical thinking, can be traced back to the 18th century Zen master Hakuin Ekaku.

Hakuin, who was also a brilliant and prolific painter, is virtually unknown to American audiences. Now, in the hopes of remedying that situation, the Japan Society in New York is staging the first retrospective of Hakuin's work in the United States.

Contemplating 'The Sound of One Hand'

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

So asked Hakuin, the author of this well known Zen koan. Hakuin was one of the most important Japanese Zen masters of the Rinzai school. Hakuin often asked his students to contemplate and meditate on this koan. Hakuin Ekaku (白隠慧鶴, 1686–1769 or 1685–1768) was one of the most influential figures in Japanese Zen Buddhism.

Much of Hakuin's practice focused, as his teachings did, on zazen and koan practice. His motto was "meditation in the midst of activity is a thousand times superior to meditation in stillness". Hakuin's experiences of enlightenment seemed to come at unexpected moments, often when he was just walking or reading. One experience that he wrote about took place while he was walking through a torrential rain. As the water reached his knees, he suddenly realized the meaning of a particular verse that he had read earlier, and was seized by enlightenment. He had many such experiences, both large and small. Laughter was a large part of Hakuin's reaction to his enlightenments, and he was known to burst into spontaneous laughter upon realizing the essence of a particular koan, causing those around him to believe him to be a madman.

My heartfelt mission is to tell everyone on the planet that there is hope and life after stroke or any traumatic life-altering experience. I want to inspire others not only with my words but also with my art. Hakuin asked this question: 'What is the sound of one hand clapping?'. Could it be painting in wild abandon with your non-dominate hand? Creating 'The Sound of One Hand'?

On a Personal Note:
Today is my birthday and I have many things to be grateful for in my life. I am a year older and hopefully a year wiser. I am to be a grandma for the first time any day now. I have recently had my artwork displayed in a major central coast gallery. My art is featured in Dick Blick's 100 year celebration Studio Catalog. I am recovering successfully from a recent surgery. I live in one of the most beautiful areas on earth. I have family and friends who love and support me. And, I have the best service dog ever, Gabe. Life is good!

The above contemporary sumi-e is one of the first sumi-e created with my non- dominate left hand and one of my personal favorites. It was inspired by the many little flowers dancing on my deck during the summertime. The original painting was displayed in the Lauryn Taylor Art Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It sold to a gentleman living in Beijing China.

What is an Ensō?
The Ensō is one of the most prevalent images of Zen Art, and it has become a symbol of the clean and strong Japanese aesthetic. The ensō is an expression of the mind of the artist who brushes it. As a symbol, the circle expresses the totality of our being. The circle points to the most vital aspect of our essence -- it's ultimate wholeness. The ensō symbolizes enlightenment, power, and the universe itself. It is a direct expression of thusness or this-moment-as-it-is.

This image was inspired by my new granddaughter due to arrive soon. Her name will be Aven. Aven is a 15th century Celtic name meaning 'pure radiance'. Aven is also a flower. Mountain Aven's are delicate yet strong sturdy little flowers that grow in very high altitudes. These little beauties are related to the rose. Puts a different meaning to the phrase 'my wild Irish rose!'

This is Where I Live

Sometimes I like to take a break from painting. At this time, I thoroughly enjoy creating sketchbooks with a theme. Making them feeds my very soul. Each individual drawing is a snapshot in time and it contains a loving part of me. To start my book, I took many many pictures of the outside and inside of my home. I enjoyed shooting all the 'nooks and crannies' of every corner and space. And, all the while thinking in my head, 'how shall I draw this scene?'

This sketchbook is still a work in progress. The book has the theme of 'This is Where I Live'. The completed sketchbook will be on display in The Art House Gallery at 303 Grand. The gallery is located in Brooklyn, NY. The Art House is a co-op for artists around the world and we build projects together. This is the second sketchbook I have created for The Art House. My book will remain on permanent display in their library.

So far, I have the outside completed, which consists of the first 19 pages. The finished sketchbook will contain 38 pages both inside and outside of where I live. Please stop by my website to view the sketchbook at this point ~ Outside. Stay tuned. The Inside will be finished soon!

I have been a tad-bit neglectful of my blog recently and for that I apologize. I'll dust of the pollen and try to keep up better and in a more timely manner this summer month of July. Ah, speaking of July. Now this brings me to the subject of my post today. July and summer pollen.

Pollen was actually the inspiration for this sumi-e called Dance of the Pollen. Every summer afternoon here in Carmel Valley a breeze kicks up. It shoots down the valley hills and covers the land. This breeze can be warm or a bit cold depending on the temperature of the day. The daily breeze generally carries all sorts of pollen that dance in the air. The pollen come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. They dance, they twirl, and they fly. Very fun to watch as long as you don't get it in your nose! The above sumi-e was created on just such a day.

This wonderful contemporary sumi-e by Casey Shannon was inspired by the lovely Oak Trees that surround my home. I love waking up in the morning to look out my window and see these majestic branches. You never know what little critter may have slept in them the previous night. It's always a surprise to see who may be curled up in the tree's strong branches and just waking to start the day. It's a very spiritual experience for me to witness this magic of nature.

Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay" from French) is a process of making fine art prints from a digital source usung ink-jet printing. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such prints. Beside its association with Iris prints, in the past few years, the word “giclée,” as a fine art term, has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant "archival" inks. I have 15 images to choose from in my Fine Art Gallery not found elsewhere.

Ever wonder who is the greatest Haiku artist of all time? In my humble opinion, that person would be Matsuo Basho. Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉, 1644 – November 28, 1694) was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan. During his lifetime, Bashō was recognized for his works in the collaborative haikai no renga form; today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as a master of brief and clear haiku. His poetry is internationally renowned, and within Japan many of his poems are reproduced on monuments and traditional sites.

This contemporary Sumi-e was inspired by all the beautiful Robins singing and dancing in the Oak Trees that surround my home. I am captivated by watching the wild birds and enjoy them very much as they play among the tree branches chasing each other. They flit from limb to limb in wild abandon. Birds are incredibly beautiful creatures and lovely to paint. There are many kinds of birds living here in Carmel Valley. This Spring the Robins seem to be everywhere with their song.

This is a contemporary Sumi-e I created one evening while I was sitting in my studio 'day dreaming'. The image appeared to me very clearly as if by a mysterious magic. I love bamboo and the significance of this majestic plant of the grass family. I often use bamboo as the subject for my paintings.

Ever since the beginning of Chinese and Japanese writing and painting, bamboo has been written about and also been painted in the same manner, in other words, a work depicting bamboo is both a painting and a piece of calligraphy. There are so-called “bamboo painters” who all their lives paint only bamboo. "The bamboo is strong, upright, and dependable. He may bend with the wind, the storm and the rain, but he never breaks. He is a true gentleman of courage and endurance". (Ju 1989).

Bamboo also exhibits a certain visual appeal. Its straight stalk was the symbol of the sage, in that adversity could always bend it but it could never break it. I want to be like the mighty bamboo!

AFC celebrates One Year

The Art for Cancer Group is excited to celebrate it's First Anniversary of existence. We are a global group of artists that have banded together to help fight cancer. A portion (100% - 25%) of the proceeds of the sale of our designated art pieces is donated to various cancer research organizations. We have some amazing artists and stunning artwork represented in our group. We currently have over 240 members world wide with over 2000 pieces of art donated that include painting, photography, digital art, and mixed media.

This is a treasure from my personal Ensō collection. What is an Enso? In Zen Buddhist painting, Ensō symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body and spirit create in full moment-to-moment concert. The Ensō symbolizes enlightenment, power, and the universe itself. It is a direct expression of thusness or this-moment-as-it-is. Ensō is considered to be one of the most profound subjects in zenga (Zen inspired painting).

'Kokoro tadashikereba sunawachi fude tadashi'.

This is a lovely delicate sumi-e of some wild flowers that appear as if by magic every Spring in my garden walkway. They are so airy and light. The blossoms are 'see through' and paper thin. And, they sway gently back and forth in the Spring breezes that roll though the valley. I am not sure what they are called. They are some form of wild orchid, I think.

Be Well Forest

This sumi-e is from my Gallery Be Well.

The phrase 'Be Well' is a greeting between friends that is used frequently in Africa. When I visited that lovely continent, I picked up this phrase and I use it often in my everyday communication with others. It has become a personal greeting known to all my friends. After experiencing a devastating stroke several years ago, this phrase grew to have a heartfelt meaning for me. The large round red chop is interpreted to mean 'Be Well'. I have used this chop on each of the Sumi-e paintings exhibited in this gallery.

This sumi-e 'Be Well Forrest' was inspired by the oak tree forest that surrounds my home. My house is nestled in and under these beauties. The Oak Trees are majestic spirits and provide a pleasant home, not only for me, but also for the delightful creatures of Carmel Valley. My favorite creatures are the plentiful and various birds that flit around in the branches of these incredible trees every day, while singing and playing to their hearts content. It's a marvel to watch them.

How to get to the Brooklyn Art Library
The building is located on the corner of Coffey St and Richards St in Red Hook. Please enter from Coffey street. We will have a nice lighted sign to help guide you to our entrance.

Take the F or G train to Smith/9th St. station. Take bus B-77 to Rocky Sullivan's Bar. Walk up to Coffey and make a left. You will see the sign!

This is my self portrait that I will be sending to the Art House Gallery for the Self Portrait Project Exhibition. The gallery will be hanging on their walls various self portraits in all media from artists around the world. And, this exhibit will be the largest collection of portraits ever! Not only will they have the portraits on exhibition at the Brooklyn Art Library in New York, they will create a book that will document all of the submissions. The book will be available for purchase at the gallery.

Jon Kabat-Zinn asks 'Can you be here now, wherever you are?' Interesting and very important question. Is this a wake up call for each of us? Zinn says 'the bell of mindfulness tolls in each moment, inviting us to come to our senses, reminding us that we can wake up to our lives, NOW, while we have them to live'.

We live in a very fast paced and somewhat unhealthy world. I find it difficult to 'be here now' in every moment. However, when I am painting I come very close to attaining that divine presence. Or, when I am meditating, I also find myself solidly in the present moment.

There is a Japanese Proverb:
'Now is a gift, that's why they call it the present'

The sumi-e you see above is called 'Be Here Now'. This image was inspiried by my personal journey into art. It was created after my mind preparation for painting. I saw this image vibrantly clear in my mind and needed to brush it to my paper. The original painting is for sale in Gallery Spirit. Fine Art Reproductions are available here. Rain Bamboo

This Sumi-e is called Rain Bamboo. It is my hottest selling image of last year and is proving to be a favorite seller this new year as well. It is also my most viewed piece of art on my POD (print on demand) websites.

Bamboo is a very special image in Asian art. Bamboo signifies strength and the ability to bend. In our current world and economic climate, we all can use this quality within ourselves. We can embrace the spirit of the bamboo. We need to be strong and we need to be able to bend with the times in grace.

Here is another fairly early sumi-e created with Japanese Watercolor. This painting was created approximately one month following my very first attempt at painting after experiencing my stroke. This painting was a lot of fun to do and a personal spiritual journey into art. At this point in my recovery painting, I felt more 'at one' with the brush. I had done my meditation before starting my artwork. I felt calm and had no preconceived idea about how this sumi-e was to look. I let my brush lead me into the painting rather than trying to force the brush strokes into any shape.

With this painting, I let the spirit of the bamboo talk to me and guide me. I forced nothing and let my idea that I was painting with my non-dominate hand after a devastating stroke just 'be'. This was the first time I had been able to achieve that place and I was pleased with the result. Compared to the first sumi-e I shared with you in my last blog post, I had made serious advancements in my attitude and in my mind and in my painting.

The original framed sumi-e has a happy home in the collection of an art collector in Carmel, CA. The artist seal = Year of the Boar.

Welcome 2010!

Welcome 2010!

To welcome the new year, I thought it would be appropriate for me to take stock of my blessings, which there are many, and to share a story. The restoration of my ability to continue my art after my experience of a massive brain stem stroke is a huge blessing for me. This event (turned blessing) is one of the most spiritual aspects and teachings of my life. For this, I am truly grateful.

The sumi-e you see above is THE very first attempt at painting with my non-dominant left-hand. This painting does not even have a name. It's untitled. Maybe I should call it 'Grateful'. Anyway, I thought it would be appropriate to share this painting with you today, the first day of 2010. I used drawing to recover from my massive and devastating stroke and this activity literally saved my life. I was an artist and a high school art teacher before the big event. However, somehow for years, I felt I would not be able to paint again. That was in my head!

About five years ago, I tried. The painting above was my first attempt and my first sumi-e in 20 years. I thought to myself, 'Huh, you can still paint' and 'It's not a masterpiece but you can paint' and 'You better get practicing girl'. So, I did. Along with my day job of counseling at the college where I now work - I painted. And, I painted.

Three years ago, I launched my personal art website and then began entering local painting competitions again. Last year, I started my first POD and this summer really expanded my art sites, adding more PODs, started this blog, and joined Facebook and Twitter. I'm on a roll now! My artwork is showing and selling all over the country. This is a wonderful blessing.

I wish you all a joyful and peaceful New Year in 2010! Count your many blessings. Big or small. And, if you don't see any, make some up. It's all in our attitude. They will come. You appreciate and have gratitude - They come!

Saying Good Bye to 2009

Well my dear readers, here we are saying good-bye to this year 2009. What a year it has been with it's disappointments, changes, scares, up's and down's, challenges, surprises, and yes, joys. We have each experienced this year in different ways and in different degrees. And, I am glad to start off a new year and new decade, which I hope will be more loving, tolerant, calm, and peaceful for us all.

Personally,I am looking forward to seeing the 'Blue Moon' tomorrow on New Year's Eve. This astronomical phenomenon will not occur again until 2020 or so I am told by Brian Williams of the NBC Nightly News. It will not occur on a Thursday New Year's Eve for a very long time.

A blue moon is a full moon that is not timed to the regular monthly pattern. Most years have twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra days accumulate, so that every two or three years (on average about every 2.7154 years), there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon." Do you remember that song Blue Moon? That was my dad's favorite song.

This is my last blog entry for 2009. I have enjoyed communicating with you this year and will continue to do so as long as you bless me with your readership. I wish you all peace and joy in the new year of 2010 and a glorious decade ahead!

Are Haiku and Sumi-e related?

What do you think? Now let’s look at the undisputed master of the haiku, Matsuo Bashō, an Edo-period Japanese haiku poet. Bashō’s poetry was quickly recognized for it’s simple and natural style. Sumi-e is recognized for it’s simple and elegant brush strokes. A natural combination.

Let me show you an example of how I have used haiku in combination with non-traditional contemporary sumi-e. For me as an artist, usually the haiku inspires the sumi-e. This results in a simple creative expression and profound experience. The following haiku is considered to be Basho’s most famous haiku writing of poetry.

Flowering Alone

This contemporary Sumi-e is called 'Flowering Alone' and is painted with Sumi (ink) and Japanese watercolor. This image was inspired by the lonely and lovely little flowers and plants that manage to sprout up even in snow. They are determined to live in the harshest conditions of winter. I am reminded of this haiku:

"Just by being,
I'm here--
In snow-fall."

Now here is a concept we all could live by. We can thrive and live no matter what our condition might be in life. If you look closely at this sumi-e, you see a delicate little flower on a long stem with a few thorns. You see the struggle of beautiful life conquering all and the thorns representing obstacles overcome. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could be like nature and just be? Flowering alone................

Ever looked up at the full moon in awe? I have many times and felt bathed in the moon's magical glow. I often wondered who else might be looking at the moon at that moment and feel blessed by it's white glowing light. I am reminded of a childrens song about the moon. It goes like this:

God bless the moon,
And, God bless me,
God bless the one that I want to see!

This Sumi-e is called 'Blue Bamboo Midnight'. Media: Sumi (ink) and Japanese watercolor. This glowing image was inspired by a full moon shinning down on a lovely group of bamboo. In Chinese culture, bamboo represents strength but with the ability to bend. Lovely symbolism.
